Couples Counseling

My work with couples is strongly influenced by Imago Relationship Theory, and by the work of the Gottman Love Lab.

Harville Hendrix, Ph.D, and Helen Hunt, M.A., M.L.A. originated Imago Relationship Therapy, an intervention that heightens a couple’s awareness to their partners old relational wounds, and develops a safe space for healing them. It also provides a clear framework for learning the skills for communicating effectively around conflict, and difficult to talk about subject areas.

John Gottman, Ph.D and Julie Schwartz Gottman, Ph.D, have been studying and treating couples for decades. Their principles are straightforward, yet powerful, in teaching partners strategies for making their relationships work. The Gottmans help couples focus on each other, paying attention to the small moments that make up the heart and soul of any relationship, and this attention provides a solid foundation for resolving conflict and for learning to live with the conflicts that cannot be resolved.

Family Therapy

My work with families is heavily influenced by Systems Theory.

Systems Theory: The goal of Systems Therapy is for a group to gain insight into each members role as it relates to the healthy functioning of the whole group. The technique relies on identifying specific behavior patterns and how each member responds to anxiety within the dynamic. By doing this, the individual can begin to understand and transform their patterns to more productive, relational behaviors.

A Little About Me…

There is a crack in everything‚Ķ that is how the light gets in…

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been pursuing and enjoying my private psychotherapy practice since 1990; most of the last 20 years have been in the South Bend area. My extensive training allows me to use a variety of client centered approaches including Gestalt, mindfulness, and EMDR to help my clients embrace the healing they desire both personally and relationally.

All of this adds up to the reality that I love to meet my clients in the moment, right where they are, and partner with them to remove obstacles and to help achieve a more open, mindful and engaged life.

Indiana University School of Social Work, Master of Social Work, 1988
Hanover College, Bachelor of Arts, 1983

Advanced Training
EMDR Training, Boca Raton, FL, 2013, (What is EMDR?)
Mindfulness Training, Various schools of thought and practice, since 1978, (What is Mindfulness?)
Indianapolis Gestalt Institute, Intensive Three Year Program, 1995-98, (What is Gestalt?)

My office is conveniently located at
the Commerce Center in South Bend.

Please park in any spot marked ‘2 Hour Visitor Parking,’ located on the west side of the building, or along the East Race. Then, walk back onto Colfax Avenue, and enter Colfax Avenue door. You will go up the stairs, and turn right. Look to your right – you will see Suite 114. My name is on the door. There is wheelchair accessibility. For that, I recommend you park along the East Race. From those parking spaces, you will see the ramp. Once inside the building, follow signs to Suite 114.
